4 – Female bears will typically reach reproductive maturity at 3-5 years old while males will usually be mature by 4-6 years old.

5 – A mother bear will take care of her cubs for about 2-3 years before they become independent enough to survive on their own.

6 – Brown bears are usually found in Alaska and Russia but they live all over North America too.

11 – The word “bear” is derived from the Proto-Indo-European root urs, meaning “brown”.

12 – They have a sense of smell that can detect food up to 20 miles away.

13 – A bear’s claws can grow up to four inches long and they will use them for climbing trees, digging, and fighting other bears.

14 – Bears hibernate during the winter months – their heart rate drops from 40-50 beats per minute to 8-12 beats per minute while they sleep.

17 – Polar bears have black skin that is covered with an invisible layer of fur which helps them stay warm during the long winter month. A polar bear’s fur doesn’t actually have white pigment, but actually clear with a layer of air bubbles that reflect light and make it appear white.

18 – A bear’s sense of smell is seven times stronger than a human’s sense of smell.

19 – They hibernate for about 6 months out of the year to conserve energy during winter months.
