4 – Malta was ruled by the Arabs from 870-1090, then became part of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily and later passed to Aragon, Spain and Austria before becoming an independent republic on September 21, 1964.

5 – Despite its small size, it has played a significant role in world history – including being one of only two locations where Stonehenge-style megalithic temples exist (the other is in Göbekli Tepe).
